Monographic album (2024)
Natures (2024) is a concept album by the composer David Chaillou. Based on the quartet Vita Nova and gradually rises towards the nocturnal sound of the last of the ten pieces, Barque, which is whispered by the piano. There are many imaginary landscapes that trace a path in which sound objects of different nature enter into dialogue. Traditional instruments – piano, cello, string quartet, percussions – are answered in some pieces by natural elements that are part to the composer’s soundspace: birds singing, the interpreter’s voice and breath. This work thrives on the idea of resonance and listening to the world and pursues the approach initiated by Légendes, the first monographic CD by David Chaillou.

“The word “legend” suggests to everyone a distant and wonderful story which is reinvented each time it is told. There is no longer any present or past; we enter a borderless space of the imaginary and timelessness. In composing Légendes, I wanted to create on the piano this same idea of blurring the gap between past and present, and of freedom of the imagination.
The eleven pieces on this album are presented as an inner journey, a listening itinerary that forms a kind of narrative thread without words. Illusions, mirages, distortions, echoes—all the effects that Légendes plays with were made possible by a kind of intimacy with the piano.
The play on contrasts (distance and proximity, emptiness and fullness) and the approach to harmonic texture attempt to create a new sound space that could be described as a spectral-tonal halo. Finnish pianist Laura Mikkola, who recorded these works, has brought out all their resonances in masterly fashion. “ D.C. -
